چکیده

In 1961, Vickrey posed the problem of finding an analytic solution to a first-price auction with two buyers having valuations uniformly distributed on [v1, v1] and [v2, v2]. To date, only special cases of the problem have been solved. In this paper, we solve this general problem and in addition allow for the possibility of a binding minimum bid. Several interesting examples are presented, including a class where the two bid functions are linear.

First price auctions with general information structures: Implications for bidding and revenue

This paper explores the consequences of information in sealed bid first price auctions. For a given symmetric and arbitrarily correlated prior distribution over valuations, we characterize the set of possible outcomes that can arise in a Bayesian equilibrium for some information structure. In particular, we characterize maximum and minimum revenue across all information structures when bidders ...

FIRST PRICE AUCTIONS WITH GENERAL INFORMATION STRUCTURES: IMPLICATIONS FOR BIDDING AND REVENUE By

We explore the impact of private information in sealed-bid first-price auctions. For a given symmetric and arbitrarily correlated prior distribution over values, we characterize the lowest winning-bid distribution that can arise across all information structures and equilibria. The information and equilibrium attaining this minimum leave bidders indifferent between their equilibrium bids and al...

Asymmetric First-Price Auctions - A Dynamical-Systems Approach

We introduce a new approach for analysis and numerical simulations of asymmetric first-price auctions, which is based on dynamical systems. We apply this approach to asymmetric auctions in which players’ valuations are power-law distributed. We utilize a dynamical-systems formulation to provide a proof of the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium strategies in the cases of two coalitions ...

Numerical Analysis of Asymmetric First Price Auctions

We propose numerical algorithms for solving first price auction problems where bidders draw independent valuations from heterogeneous distributions. The heterogeneity analyzed in this work is what might naturally emerge when subsets of distributionally homogeneous bidders collude. Bid functions and expected revenues are calculated for two special cases. Extensions to more general asymmetric fir...

On the analysis of asymmetric first price auctions

We provide new tools for studying asymmetric first price auctions, connecting their equilibria to the ρ-concavity of the underlying type distributions, and showing how one can use surplus expressions for symmetric auctions to bound equilibrium behavior in asymmetric auctions. We apply these tools to studying procurement auctions in which, as is common in practice, one seller is given an advanta...
